Biography

Birth

Antonie Cornelis de Nijs was born on the 5th of October, 1871 to Hendrik Adolf de Nijs and Sara Cornelia (Patist) de Nijs[1]. He was the second oldest son and second oldest child.

The translation of the birth certificate is as follows:

On this day, the seventh day of October, eighteen hundred and seventy-one, we, the undersigned Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages of the city of Utrecht, appeared in the house of the municipality:

Hendrik Adolf de Nijs, workman, aged twenty-seven years, living here, in Walsteeg E 489, who declared to us, that on the fifth of this month at ten o'clock in the evening his wife Sara Cornelia Patist, without profession, gave birth in his house to a child of the male sex, to which the first names Antonie Cornelis shall be given.

This declaration was made and the record of it drawn up in the presence of Theodorus Kelder, machinist, forty years of age, and Antoni van der Wolk, stonemason, thirty-seven years of age, both residing here, which record, after reading, was signed by us and the witnesses declared that the declarant was not able to write.

Antonie married Odilia Fritz on the 4th of May, 1898, in the Hague[2].

The marriage certificate, when translated, reads as follows: On this fourth day of May, eighteen hundred and ninety-eight, we, the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages of the municipality of The Hague, saw the following persons in the town hall:

Antonie Cornelis de Nijs, twenty-six years old, workman, born and living in Utrecht, son of full age of Hendrik Adolf de Nijs and Sara Cornelia Patist, both deceased

-and-

Odilia Fritz, twenty-four years old, domestic servant, born in Utrecht, living here, daughter of full age of Joseph Fritz, merchant, living here, present at the time and once immigrating (not sure what this means) , and Wilhelmina Maria van Rijswijk, deceased.

The applicants have presented their birth certificates, the death certificates of their parents and their mother, the permission granted by the Colonel to the applicants, serving as militia, to contract a marriage, the certificate of his fulfilment of the National Militia together with the evidence of the announcements made in Utrecht.

The appearers having notified us that they accept each other as husband and wife, and that they will faithfully fulfil all the duties imposed on spouses by the Law, we declare in the name of the Law that they are bound by marriage. Which has taken place in the presence of Hendrik Adolf de Nijs, twenty-seven years old, corporal, brother of the bridegroom, Frederik Hendrik Martinus, thirty-six years old, engineer, Johannes Marinus Schouten, forty years old, shoemaker, and Willem Molenaar, thirty-one years old, merchant, all living here.

We have drawn up this deed and after reading it have signed it without the appearers, her father and witnesses.
